April 2024

On 4 April 2024, UNIC’s Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Director of the MD Programme, Danny Alon-Ellenbogen, and Assistant Professor in Pathophysiology at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), Ourania Kolokotroni, led an interprofessional learning (IPL) activity at Limassol General Hospital. This event brought together UNIC fifth-year medical students and CUT nursing students to engage in collaborative learning and teamwork.

During the IPL activity, an external company facilitated a workshop focusing on the challenges and importance of teamwork in ensuring patient safety. Following the workshop, the students participated in a simulated exercise, which seamlessly transitioned into a discussion about applying these teamwork principles to real-life clinical situations.

An online survey conducted after the event revealed that the students were highly enthusiastic and appreciated the learning experience. Dr Alon-Ellenbogen commented on the organization of the event, noting ‘the activity was well organised. It began with a simulated team work that was then followed by a joint discussion relating it to real life clinical scenarios’. Dr Kolokotroni highlighted the benefits of the activity, stating, ‘it enabled the students to develop collaborative skills and understand the critical value of effective teamwork, recognizing the importance of each team member’s role in achieving positive outcomes. This is a crucial skill for healthcare professionals working in multidisciplinary teams’.
